Tag Gorton's Live Steam Workshop
For those dismantling and modifying locos, I would highly recommend this book. It was available from Atlantic Publishers but is occaionally available on the secondhand market. I understand it is due to be re-printed.
Garden Rail Magazine
There is also lots of practical information in this great magazine from Atlantic Publishers. It is published monthly and you get ten years of back issues with an e-subscription. I have to admit that I love the mags though, and have every one!
16mm Today
Membership of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers provides not only the the superb 16mm Today magazine, but access to local members who will be ready to offer advice. See www.16mm.org.uk. It is an absolute bargain and if you do nothing else - join this!!
A Passion for Steam by Mark Horovitz
For those wanting to understand the workings of small steam locos, I can think of no better book than A Passion for Steam by Marc Horovitz. It is also a great book for those who like to drool over some of the classic garden railway locos and is available from Atlantic Publishers.
Narrow Gauge World
This magazine, from Atlantic Publishers is edited by Andrew Charman, who also edits the excellent 16mm Today magazine. There is rarely anything on garden railways, but there is lots to read about the real thing. It is published bi-monthly.
Planting your Garden Railway
This was one of the few things that I found time to buy at the big Peterborough show this year (2013) and it is a real gem. Betty Pinniger's practical advice on planting is complemented by Dave Pinnigers superb photography of some very special garden railways. The text is very readable, but is perhaps more of a resource to dip into to get answers for planning and buying plants, rather than a cover-to-cover read. But it really is more than just a text book - it is full of inspiration and would be the perfect book to leave around in full view - especially if the 'management' believe that the garden is as important as the railway ;-)

Here are a few recommendations - there is so much information out there, but these will give you a good start. I will occasionally add to the list when I get time.....
